In Karlstad, water is never far away. (This is not a threat!)
The city is built on a delta where Klarävlen joins Vänern, Sweden's biggest lake and gives the amazing feeling of living by the sea.
Sandgrundsparken
After visiting the inspiring art galley Sandgrund Lars Lerin and the amazing Värmland’s Museum a beautiful park awaits you, Sandgrundsparken. Here you find all the space you need to unwind. Divided into different sections, the park offers a variety of landscapes,
different beautiful floral arrangements and space for exploration. Every summer you find different activities taking place both arranged by the municipality and by private initiatives, last year's Pride parade took place in the park due to the pandemic.
If you are lucky you can catch a glimpse of the people sliding lazily by in the water in a pool ring, enjoying their life to the fullest.
In Karlstad, everything is a 10-minute bike ride away meaning I get to spend more time with my family and do stuff I enjoy, like playing music or games instead of commuting. No more metro or time spent in car queues. I heard people in Stockholm spend on average more time commuting than being on vacation per year, which is crazy when you think about it.

Enjoy the water
There are many spots in Karlstad where you can enjoy the cool water and Sandgrundsparken is in the middle of the entrance of Klarälvsdeltat and here you find beaches with sand and wooden jetties to enjoy the summers, right in the middle of the city!
“Iand my fiancé proposed to each other with our feet in the water of Vänern, a way of inviting nature in one of our most important moments.”
- Rosanna, Communications Manager at The Great Journey
If you are interested in watersports like SUP, canoing and maybe saling, there are multiple places to launch. Inre Hamn is a great place to rent SUPs or canoes to explore the vast delta! It is also here you find the Boat busses!
Bussbåtar (Boat busses)
Maybe you just want to lay back and relax without sitting in a pool ring, but still, see the city from the water? Then I have news for you!
Boat buses can take you from Inre Hamn to a lot of places! Why not take the bus boat to Mariebergskogen, and visit the adorable bunnies, hens and horses in Lillskogen and once again enjoy the sun! Or take a guided tour (I can recommend that!) and learn more about the city and its history!
It’s a bus and a boat, a Boat bus!
Learn more about the boat bus over at Värmlands Trafik’s website.
